Javier was speechless. The “director” he had dreamed of working with treated his peasant father-in-law with complete respect.
Don Pedro smiled and calmly explained:
“I didn’t want to boast, but for years I’ve been investing my savings with a few friends in building this company. Alejandro is the president. This time I came not only to visit my daughter, but also to discuss the opening of a new branch in the city. I thought I’d introduce you to him and see if we could work together…”
Javier’s body slumped. He remembered her indifference, the short answers she gave him, the contempt in her eyes. Only deep regret remained. He stammered:
“Forgive me, Don Pedro… I didn’t know…”
His father-in-law sighed and said slowly:
“I don’t need you to respect me for my money. I only want you to love my daughter and value the family. But today I clearly saw what weighs most heavily on your heart.”
He stood up, picked up his old backpack, and prepared to leave. Maria burst into tears and tried to stop her father. Javier, however, turned pale and began to lament. A golden opportunity had slipped through his fingers because of pride and contempt.
That night, silence fell over the house. A dejected Javier realized that true wealth does not lie in an elegant suit, nor in a bulging wallet, nor in a luxury car, but in the kindness and dignity of people. He also understood that he had lost not only a business opportunity, but also his wife’s trust and his father-in-law’s respect: a humble farmer who was, in reality, the majority shareholder of the company he so desperately wanted to work for.
