When Fingers Go White: Understanding Raynaud’s Phenomenon

What Exactly is Raynaud’s?

Raynaud’s is a condition where the small arteries that supply blood to your skin narrow excessively in response to cold or emotional stress. This is called a vasospasm.

During an attack, blood flow to the affected area (usually the fingers or toes) is severely limited. This typically follows a three-stage color progression:

  1. White (Pallor): Blood flow is cut off, making the skin look waxy or “dead.”

  2. Blue (Cyanosis): As the remaining oxygen in the tissue is used up, the skin may turn blue.

  3. Red (Rubor): As the area warms and blood flow rushes back, the skin turns red and may throb or tingle.
