Most people think of the dishwasher as a machine built solely for plates, cutlery, and glasses. In reality, it is one of the most underused appliances in the home. With its strong jets, hot water cycles, and steaming rinse, the dishwasher can do much more than clean dishes. It can sanitize, refresh, deodorize, and deep-clean a variety of items that many people would never think to place inside.
By understanding what the dishwasher can safely handle, you can save time, reduce manual scrubbing, and improve household hygiene. Before expanding your dishwasher’s role, however, it’s important to know how different materials respond to high heat and high pressure.
Understanding What Is Dishwasher-Safe
Not all materials can handle the dishwasher environment. High heat and strong water pressure can damage delicate or porous items.
As a general rule:
SAFE:
- Plastic labeled “dishwasher-safe”
- Silicone
- Stainless steel
- Hard glass
- Certain ceramics
NOT SAFE:
- Wood
- Cast iron
- Fine china or crystal
- Nonstick cookware with delicate coatings
- Electronics or parts with wiring
Always look for a dishwasher-safe symbol before washing anything unfamiliar.
