1. Brightly Colored or Flashy Shirts

A funeral is not the time to stand out. Shirts in bold colors like red, neon green, or bright yellow can draw unnecessary attention to you rather than honoring the person who has passed away. Similarly, shirts with shiny fabrics, sequins, or flashy patterns can feel inappropriate in a solemn setting.
Traditionally, black, navy, gray, or other muted tones are preferred because they symbolize mourning and respect. If black is not available, darker shades of blue, brown, or even subdued earth tones can be acceptable. The key is subtlety, your presence should reflect support for the grieving family, not personal fashion statements.
2. Casual T-Shirts or Tank Tops

While casual wear is common in daily life, it is considered too informal for a funeral. T-shirts with logos, slogans, or images are especially problematic because they can distract from the seriousness of the ceremony. Tank tops or sleeveless shirts are also discouraged, as they often appear too relaxed and fail to convey the dignity expected at such an event.
Instead, choose a collared shirt, blouse, or simple button-down. For men, pairing a long-sleeved shirt with trousers or a suit jacket creates a respectful appearance. For women, a modest blouse paired with a skirt or pants is appropriate. Even if the family specifies a “casual” dress code, casual should still mean neat, subdued, and respectful.
