Why Salad Greens Spoil So Fast
Leafy greens are delicate by nature. Their thin leaves and high water content make them especially vulnerable to excess moisture, air exposure, and mold. When greens sit in damp conditions or aren’t stored properly, they begin to break down—leading to browning, wilting, and unpleasant textures. That’s why how you store them matters just as much as how fresh they are when you buy them.
Step 1: Wash—and Dry—Thoroughly
While some people prefer washing greens just before use, washing them before storage can actually help them last longer—as long as they’re dried properly.
Rinse your greens in cool water to remove dirt and bacteria, then dry them completely using a salad spinner or clean kitchen towels. Moisture is the biggest enemy of fresh greens, so the drier they are going into storage, the longer they’ll last.
