A few days later, while I was still at the guesthouse, my phone rang.
Charlotte.
I let the phone ring for a moment, then answered in a calm tone.
“Hello?”
His voice trembled.
“You knew about this, didn’t you?”
Did you know?
The house… The notary called me. There are huge debts. Thousands of euros! If they don’t get paid, they’ll seize the house. And you… you have the money, right?
I couldn’t help but smile.
“Maybe I do have the money… but you kicked me out.”
Silence. Then she pleaded:
“You have to help me!”
My quiet revenge
Maybe I would have helped her… if she had been different towards me. If she hadn’t always treated me like a stranger.
But at that moment, I knew I owed him nothing anymore.
“I would help you, Charlotte,” I said. “If only you had been nicer to me when we were children.”
Then I hung up.
A new life for me
